Subject: How Do I Make The Side Panels Transparent?

Ok , I'm no genius, but my guild has asked me to be in charge of the website and I cant figure out who to either A. remove the two side panels and only leave the links or B. make them transparent.
Im pretty sure these can be done (one or the other) I just lack the knowledge of how to make changes to the css.

    You would have to use CSS and transparency only works in Firefox and Safari (not in Internet Explorer)
